Dieticians not so sure after all?

Posted on by graeme

An article popped up on BBC Health this week that caught our eye at the Foundry.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-14882832

It seems that those in the world of dietetics are finally realising that some of their advice may not be all it is cracked up to be. This interesting given the amount of criticism ‘nutritionists’ have come in for over recent years for recommending such ‘radical’ approaches as reducing carbohydrate intake for weight loss or the suggestion that dietary fat may not actually be responsible for heart disease. The fact is that little in this article is of news to those of us who have been working on transforming body composition for many years now. Continue reading →

Have you ever tried ‘Banting’ ?

Posted on by graeme

Today I am reposting a piece that I first put together a couple of years ago. I had fully intended to write a scathing discourse on the governments latest decision to scrap funding for sports in schools but due to my appalling time management that will have to wait. Instead I was inspired to repost this after attending the annual British Nutrition Foundation lecture with Professor John Blundell this morning, more to come on that soon as well!

I am fully persuaded that thousands of our fellow-men might profit equally by a similar course to mine; but, constitutions not being all alike, a different course of treatment may be advisable for the removal of so tormenting an affliction. I am now in that happy comfortable state that I do not hesitate to indulge in any fancy in regard to diet, but watch the consequences, and do not continue any course which adds to weight or bulk and consequent discomfort. The great charm and comfort of the system is, that its affects are palpable within a week of trial, which creates a natural stimulus to persevere for few weeks more, when the fact becomes established beyond question.

Big food businesses to solve big society’s big waistlines?

Mr Lansley has been at it again…….

Andrew Lansley's reaction to our last blog post at The Foundry

Health secretary Andrew Lansley came up against the acerbic reparte of the Foundry’s own Dave Thomas back when he was in opposition. His disparaging and needless remarks on Jamie Oliver’s attempt to encourage healthier eating in our kids though didn’t stop him taking up his new role as health secretary when the new government was formed (despite Dave’s best attempts). Private Eye hinted at close links between the then shadow health secretary and the Tesco Corporate affairs director, who certainly won’t have minded Oliver and hence Sainsbury’s taking a bit of a bashing. He was also a key player in seeing the eradication of traffic light labelling on foods via the European parliament, much to the dismay of organisations like Diabetes UK and the British Heart Foundation and allegedly at a cost of 1 billion Euro to the lobbying groups that so vehemently opposed it worried it might actually help people to select healthier options (or put them off buying the high margin crappy ones). Significant lobbying from the food industry probably shouldn’t be terribly surprising given that up until the end of 2009 Lansley himself was a paid Director on the board of Profero, an agency that represents (amongst others) Pepsi, Pizza Hut, and Mars. This man knows what he’s doing when it comes to representing the food industry, but the question is ‘does he know what he’s doing to improve public health?’

Why you should always read the evidence behind the claims…

This caught my eye while looking for something on the internet today…

http://www.wddty.com/homeopathy-relieves-side-effects-of-cancer-therapies.html

Here is the quote from the website “What Doctors Don’t Tell You”

“Homeopathy isn’t quite the quack medicine its critics claim.  It can help relieve some of the side effects of cancer therapy, the prestigious Cochrane Collaboration has discovered.

Calendula ointment eases skin irritations after radiotherapy, and Traumeel, a combination of 14 homeopathic medicines, helps relieve mouth sores caused by chemotherapy.

The Cochrane researchers found eight studies, involving 664 participants, which produced valid results”

I thought this was well worth a little look as homeopathy has been fairly well slammed in recent books from Rose Shapiro, Ben Goldacre, and Simon Singh as little more than a sham…..

Well, you might be surprised to find that the original reporting on the WDDTY website wasn’t quite as the Cochrane review reported.  Continue reading →
