Hey Tommo, glad you like it! Yup, it is amusing that medics are still advising (in some cases) the kinds of diet for people that are likely to have an entirely opposite effect. It is also interesting how narrow minded the view on cholesterol is, despite the evidence that LOW cholesterol has strong links to everything from depression to cancer.

Good article Graeme, the study that influenced most Doctors was the Jupiter study which was flawed http://balancedbodymind.wordpress.com/2010/08/27/statinscholesterol-medication-jupiter-study-was-flawed/
What alot of medics tend to forget is that statins also block the production of HMG co reductase which is a powerful antioxidant especially for cardiac tissue.

Lowering circulating cholesterol levels with a higher cholesterol and an anti inflammatory diet with good fats such as coconut fat works wonders, but leaves many medics gasping for air because of the saturated fat tag.

hope all is well in London? Tommo

I would agree Phil. Taubes work is comprehensive and in some places brilliant but there are some holes there. Questionable use of old self-reporting data and mostly anecdotal work to back up his dismissal of exercise to name but two. He is also rather quick to dismiss any emotional/psychological factors, preferring to consider them only as consequential and in no way causative. George Bray did an interesting review of it http://www.proteinpower.com/drmike/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/bray-review-of-gcbc.pdf

So, is it what you eat or how much of it you eat that makes a difference? Strong evidence would suggest that for SOME it can make a far bigger impact on weight loss when the composition and not simply the quantity of the diet is considered. P.S good to be back too!!

Good to see you blogging again Graeme.

Surely 'eating too many fattening carbs' as Taubes would have you believe is equally as oversimplistic and incorrect as 'calories in, calories out'
